About this place
Watching the owner expertly handle fish right in front of the counter is at the very heart of the experience at Rihaku, a discreet Japanese dining spot nestled in the residential neighbourhood of Nishinokyo. Sashimi is prepared with meticulous care—some cuts aged to deepen flavour, others gently seared—alongside seasonal delicacies such as finely bone-cut hamo otoshi (blanched daggertooth pike conger). Over the charcoal grill, selections such as tachiuo (beltfish), nodoguro (blackthroat seaperch), and sawara (Spanish mackerel) cook slowly, sending up an appetising, smoky aroma.
Beyond grilled dishes, the menu makes full use of quality seafood with comforting preparations like slow-simmered buri daikon (yellowtail and radish), lightly cured mackerel kizushi dressed in dashi-rich Tosa vinegar, and pressed mackerel sushi that makes a satisfying finish. Diners can also explore crisp tempura of thick asparagus and spring vegetables, sakamushi (sake-steamed fish), meat accented with sweet white miso, and an array of small drinking snacks, offering the freedom to assemble an à la carte meal to match the mood of the evening.
The dining room is composed of just a few counter seats, creating a calm, unhurried atmosphere where the sole owner-chef manages everything from prep to service. Taking time over a cup of regional sake while waiting for the next dish is part of the charm, suiting solo diners as easily as pairs enjoying quiet conversation. Because seating is so limited, making a reservation in advance is recommended, and guests should note that payment is cash only.
